Schools

Welcome to our schools page where you’ll find details of all of our tours and workshops.  We offer:

Discovery Sessions: hour-long guided tours of Tudor House or the Old Town led by an expert guide £47 per session.

Workshops: one-hour interactive sessions incorporating object handling, and other activities. Maximum group size 33. £75 per workshop.

Self-guided time: An opportunity to spend some time exploring the house and garden. Most groups spend about an hour looking around the house. Price varies depending on other activities booked.

Discovery Sessions

Join one of our expert guides for an in-depth look around Tudor House or Southampton’s Old Town. Each tour costs £47 for a group of 33. Choose from the following fantastic tours:

  • Tudor Days: Discover the secrets of this remarkable house with our expert tour guides.
  • A House in Time: Learn about the history of Southampton while exploring Tudor House. From its medieval roots through to the darkest days of World War 2.
  • The Amazing Medieval Walking Tour: Discover Southampton’s medieval past by walking our 700 year-old walls.
  • The Mayflower & Southampton: Visit sites important to the Mayflower story and discover stories about the town in the 17th century.
  • The Blitz: Find out about Southampton at War in this walking tour of the Old Town.

Workshops

Our workshops have something to offer every class.  All of our sessions are different but always include aspects of dressing up, story-telling and interactive activities that will get your students involved! All sessions are offered at £75 and last  about an hour. See below for more information.

Playtime in the Past

A whistle-stop tour through the toys children played with in the past. Try our toy timeline, master quoits and have a go at blind drawing our mystery toys!

Great Fire of London

Join us for an incredible hands-on session discovering the story of the Great Fire of London.
Take part in a selection of fun interactive activities including our ‘Great Fire Finds Dig’, sights and smells game and a chance to meet the person responsible for the fire!

Off With Their Head: The Tudors!
An action-packed session looking at all-things Tudor! Try out mystery object drawing, spot the real Henry VIII, test a war bow and discover the disgusting cures for plague…

Southampton Through Time

Southampton’s rich history goes back more than 2000 years.This session explores the people that have called the town home and charts the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval stories through a range of hands-on activities and tasks.
Activities vary depending on age but always include our mini-archaeology dig pit, mystery object game and meeting our Southampton ancestors!

Pirates & Buccaneers

 Hark back to the Golden Age of Piracy with this fun and interactive session exploring the the rogues who made their lives and sea and the stories they’ve left behind. Activities include dressing up, mystery bags and object-handling.

Our Old Town walking tour can also include pirate themes- ask us for more information!

The Victorians

Meet the Victorian inhabitants of Tudor House, investigate objects they might have used and discover the amazing Victorian inventions that helped make the world we know today!

The Mayflower

 2020 is the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Southampton. To commemorate this we’re offering a special session exploring the story in an engaging and interactive way. Examine objects from the time, meet the people aboard and find out what you might have eaten on the voyage!

Studying The Mayflower? We also offer a special Mayflower walk exploring the places important to the story.

Castles & Cannons

 Discover more about castles in the past in this session exploring fortifications. Can you work out which castle’s the earliest? Smell a castle kitchen and investigate objects you might have found inside.

Southampton Blitz

An immersive session looking at the Second World War in a sensitive way. Handle real objects from the time, dress as an ARP Warden and imagine what life would have been like for an evacuee.

Note: this session normally includes a simulated air raid drill visiting the cellar of the museum not normally open to the public. The route involves stairs and uneven floors that are not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility issues. Please bring torches.

Tudor Society

 The 1912 guidebook for Tudor House made the (probably false) claim that Henry VIII visited the house with his wife Anne Boleyn. In honour of this story we have put together this fun and hands-on session based around the Tudors.Using real Tudor artefacts and replicas explore what different aspects of life was like, including food and drink, medicine and warfare.
